Jerry,

 I am getting the impression that many professional Schmidts have been
outfitted with a CCD detectors. This is just a guess as I have not
looked at all the Schmidts. The Schmidt camera in Cerro Tololo had this
modification where a mirror was placed near the film plane which
reflects light out of the tube, sort of like a newtonian. The CCD camera
is placed outside the tube. See:

The black shroud encases the CCD portion of the scope.

The astronomer who was using the camera as was giving me a tour of this
setup.
