Hi Tony:
BGSmooth is a specialized gaussian blur program for astro film images
written by Axel Mellinger, the chap who has done those incredible widefield
Milky Way images. You can download the program at:
http://canopus.physik.uni-potsdam.de/~axm/bgsmooth.html
along with his comments about the algorithm and usage.
I use Windows, so I have found very useful a Windows "wrapper" program
(allows you to use BGSmooth directly from Windows without going to a DOS
window). Sorry, I can't remember where I got it, but someone (perhaps the
author) will probably chime in here. Anyway, the DOS version isn't hard to
use.
