It's not that bad, after you get through the initial pain. I have saved
several manual settings for the Epson printers which apply to different
types of prints (e.g. predominantly green tones; overall dark print; overall
light print; etc., etc.). It originally took some wasted paper "profiling"
these settings, but after a short time, you begin to get the hang of how the
settings will affect the output. 95% of the time, the print is excellent
and very close to the monitor colors. Naturally, for those exceptional
situations (the other 5%) you will have to play with some proof prints
before getting it right. I suspect that happens with most systems, no
matter how well you try to set up your profiles.

There are some Photoshop add-ins which will do this. Intellihance and Test
Strip come to mind. I have both, but don't really use them much anymore.
They show you on screen a side by side comparison of changes to the original
image so you can eyeball various levels of color balance, saturation,
contrast, etc. at the same time. Test Strip (by the company Vivid Details)
will make a printout of the different versions of the image on one page,
basically, it does exactly what you want. Intellihance doesn't do this;
just on-screen displays (at least I haven't found a way for it to do it).
