So, what makes Leica, Zeiss, Rodenstock, Schneider, and otehrs so
readfully expensive is not that they do it any better than others can, but
they are willing to toss out an incredible amount of  finished lenses for
destruction untill they get the ones that are just right.  Spoilage

I worked at Bausch&Lomb for 4 years during and after my college days. The
reject rate of their microscope and cinematography lenses was 60%. I used to
tour people through the facility on Saturdays, and when I told them that,
they thought quite naturally that we made a lot of junk. The exact opposite
was true, and anyone with any understanding of optics knew that this was a
good thing.
