Definitely better with the 2nd one Wade. Looks pretty good to
me.

Subject: [APML] Opinions on Second
Attempt at Comet Machholz's Ion Tail
The image I took of Comet Machholz using Provia 100F showed
some promise; however, the ion tail was extremely faint due to
thin cirrus "erasing away" the captured photons on film. Here are
the current versions:
First attempt:
http://tinyurl.com/7dep5
Second
attempt:
http://tinyurl.com/8o72n
The first
attempt I used curves without any selections. This is about the best
one can do without destroying the "neutral" background. The second
attempt I did the following:
1. Copied the blue channel into a New
image, 2. Selected just the comet and ion tail using Select/Color
Range..., 3. Once I refined the selection (i.e. removed unwanted
selections and a feather of 10), I saved it and copied the selection into
the original image, 4. I opened the selection and used Curves to
brighten the ion tail and comet.
I generally have a bad habit of
making things more difficult. Please, let me know if there's a better way
of selecting a comet and its associated ion tail. In addition, let me
know if the image is over processed. Finally, which image do you like
best?
Thanks,
Wade
