Re: [APML] GIMP and GIMPshop

Hi all,
Cinepaint is actually GIMP re-coded (it was called GIMP Hollywood at
some time, then it was FILM GIMP, finally Cinepaint) in order to be
useful in the cinema production (it has been used in movies like
scooby-doo and alia...).
The project was started by someone and then has been enhanced by SONY
and others (IIRC) for their needs (movie production) and then it has
been released to the public as free-software, so it is very well
tested and strongly programmed.
It's interface is very similiar to GIMP, altough the 1.3 version of it
(GIMP is now at version 2.2.4, which rocks, IMO)
The support for 16 bits tif isn't one thing I miss but probably just
because I cannot appreciate the difference between 8 and 12 bps
(because digital cameras ships 12 bits per channel). Anyway CINEPAINT
supports 32 bits per channel O_O.
But I'm *sure* 12 is better than 8, still I find myself really
satisfied with the GIMP as is now.
The GIMPshop plug-in, which I have discovered just a few days ago (I
believe it was on slashdot or kuro5hin) is, IMO, one of the best
effort to smooth up your transaction from PS to GIMP.
I find horrible to use PS, just because I don't know where to find/
how are called the various functions I usually use (which are, to be
honest, just 4 or 5, I mean: curves, some filter (USM the most,
channel mixer for Infrared) sometimes CROP, others ROTATE, open file
and SAVE AS :)

bottom line:
I use only the GIMP for my photographic needs, and I find myself very
satisfied, the main reasons are:
-It runs under linux (which I use daily)
-It is free software (It doesn't only means it's GRATIS, it also mean
anyone may contribute creating a plugin - last example GIMPshop -
moreover, it means I can download it (it's just 7 mb) anywhere and use
it on any computer (beeing it a MAC, WIN or Linux or BSD or...
environment. It makes no difference at all) mine or others'
-The final image quality has nothing to envy to PS one, which , it has
to be said, of course supports 16bit per channel, but a lot of
functions aren't there if you use it (the great majority of filters,
for example) which lead you to use 8bit per channel mode many times
-It's the GIMP!!!! I love it!!! they are just GREAT, do you realize
which huge amount of work they have done??? It DESERVE to be used!!

:)

Danilo.
