[APML] Help Needed in Creating Comet Composites

I've been trying to improve the Comet Machholz composite I did
yesterday (4/1); however, I'm having great difficulty in retaining
the faint comet detail when overlaying two images that have
substantial overlap.  This has led to comet degradation since the
comet is not in the same spot in either image. The best overlay
option in Photoshop has been "lighten", but this makes the tails
disappear.  A better alternative is "screen"; however, it lightens
one of the overlays too much which makes creating a stealth-like
transition between the two images almost impossible (at least for
this amateur).  Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.  I
feel my latest iteration is much improved over the first, especially
the composition; unfortunately, the upper comet's ion tail is almost
completely gone while the middle one's ion tail has been much
reduced.
