[APML] Photoshop conversion to jpeg

I have some large image files (30-50 mb) that I would like to reduce in
size. Do I need to convert to 8 bit to convert copies of those images
to jpegs? 

And, in doing so, would this compromise their questionable quality for
display from CDrom as slides? Or, is there another option to reduce the
sizes to managable levels?
