PROBLEM SOLVED.
I am stupid, (not really).

How I first printed the pictures incorrectly, I'm not sure, but probably by
specifying both Photoshop and Printer color management, thereby getting
purple pictures.  After 8-10 prints like this, I stopped actually printing
the pictures and relied on the print preview, which in the past agreed
pretty closely with what I got.

With the correct settings: source adobe RGB'98, printer profile selected in
photoshop print options, and the printer driver set to ICM, No color
correction, the print preview is purple, but the print is near perfect.

Now I have made a custom printer profile and it matches the monitor (with a
new Monaco profile) almost perfectly.

Hurray!!
