Re: [APML] CRT vs Flat Panel for display of astrophotos
At the risk of flogging a dead horse, another take on this debate is the
used monitor market. To make a logn story short, my dad's old computer
takes only a serial mouse - you every try and find a new serial port
mouse? Sheesh.
Anyhow, it was a good excuse to visit flea markets, surplus stores,
computer stores specializing in old & used equipment, etc, etc.
What did amaze me was the vast number of really good looking used monitors
for dirt cheap prices that are now available. Big ones too - 19", 21",
etc. Some were pretty badly beat up, but many in excellent shape, and some
very good quality ones too. There are so many offices dumping good CRT
monitors anymore in favour of LCD, now is a good time to pick up a good
used one. Used to be in the past you never sold off a monitor, unless it
had problems, but not now it seems.
bottom line is, with the usual "caveat emptor" mentality in place, if
somebody were looking for a "new" monitor for astro-photo or any imaging
use, that might well be the way to go.
While I still stand by our 19" LCD monitors at work for their ability to
display greyscale, my point is, you can buy - at least locally - a used 19"
or 21" used monitor - often something like a good NEC Multisync - for about
1/8th the cost of a new 19", good, LCD monitor. Bear in mind too our
specific model of LCD I have yet to see in any of the local computer
stores, so my opinion of "good" is something you see above what is in your
average big box chain store.
I think there are some LCD monitors that would impress people on this
list, but they are so dreadfully expensive when compared to a new, flat
screen CRT monitor, and ultra-expensive when compared to some of the really
good used monitors I see on the market, ifyou do not need the LCD for
reduced eyestrain like I do, I would stick with CRT.
