Re: [APML] CRT vs Flat Panel for display of astrophotos
>From what I understand contrast ratio is a nebulous term since
it's measured differently by each manufacturer. The problem with
the LCD's is the dynamic range. LCD's have a difficult time rendering
true blacks (which is important in astroimages). I actually have a high end
LCD (22" viewsonic 211B) and a CRT (22" viewsonic P225f). The CRT
produces a better image in terms of color, contrast, noise, and sharpness.
Some images do look better on the LCD for some reason but overall the CRT
outperforms it. I like to use both monitors to process an image since the
brightness
of the LCD will make any flaws in the image more apparent.

Alan,
This is puzzling me too. I did some search on the web about the value of
contrast ratio, and it doesn't seem to be a comparison point "holy grail".
See for instance

I've never heard "contrast ratio" used as a term of reference, or comparison
before. Is it a valid comparison point? And if so, what would the
recommended range be?
Thanks,
Alan
