-snip-

We just bought some new flat panel displays for work the past few
months, and the technology has increased siginifgantly in the past couple
years.

One little "detail" to look for is the Contrast Ratio. I am not
exactly sure how it works, but from a pedestrian & uneducated point of
view, the higher the contrast ratio, the better the image, especailly in
dynamic range.

For example, at work, we have Samsung 191N monitors, and at the
local best Buy, they have what appears to be the exact same monitor, but if
you read the fine print, its a "192N"

While the dot pitch and every other detail and statistic appears
to be identical, the one difference is the contrast ratio - ours is
something like 600:1 or 700:1, whereas th eoens at the store are 350: or
400:1 (doing this from memory).

Again, I am not technical enough to explain what the difference
is, but even from memory, you can see that the dynamic range on our
monitors at work (which cost siginifgantly more too, BTW) is much better,
or from a purely perspective point of view, images look "deeper" if that
makes any sense.

I will go out on a limb and say, yes, you can get flat LCD sreeen
monitors that match a good CRT monitor - BUT - it might be a special order
(we had to order ours in special) - and, the price is going to be pretty
high. Whereas a "regular" LCD monitor you see in the average store is -
oh - say on average, double the price of a comparable CRT monitor, a really
good LCD monitor with a high contrast ratio will set you back maybe three
times the price of a comparable CRT monitor. Or more.

I think it will be a few eyars more before pries for really good
LCD monitors come into line, but when you get a really good, they are amazing
joe
