RE: [APML] CRT vs Flat Panel for display of astrophotos
Rick,
A few years ago there was extensive conversation relative to the flat panel
for astrophotography. The same conclusion was reached then. I believe it
was Tony Hallas that started the investigation. You might want to check the
archives.

Subject: [APML] CRT vs Flat Panel for display of astrophotos
I just received a new 20 in Dell Ultrasharp flat panel display. After
calibration with Adobe Gamma I must say, I'm not impressed with the dynamic
range. When compared side by side with my 7 year old 19 in Gateway
(Triniton) CRT (which has been on almost continuously for the past 7 years),
the flat panel gets blown away by the CRT.
The problem is not enough dynamic range. At its lowest setting, the dark
square in the 1st step of Adobe Gamma, (which you are supposed to set near
black using brightness control) is a not so dark gray. Plus at this
brightness setting (at max contrast), the white areas are not bright white.
After calibration, pictures on the FP look washed out compared to the CRT.
Colors are not bad, but the CRT images look much more vivid.
I conclude that the flat panel just does not have the dynamic range of the
CRT, and while I love the size and weight of the FP, it just will not do for
AP (or any other photo work IMHO).
