[APML] Focusing a 500mm telephoto lens

Hi everybody,
after a little tinkering with my custom mount accessories (I hereby recall 
my main mount is a GM-8), I'm about to give my 500mm f/4.5 Pentax a try.

I do, however, have a question: are there any special caveats with reaching 
proper focus with such a monster lens? I mean, is it enough to just set it 
to infinity and shoot? Please note that the lens was modified to fit Nikon 
cameras perfectly (in fact, it's just as if it were a Nikon-branded lens), 
so that brand difference is not an issue.
