The ST-4 is a tried and proven stand alone autoguider.
If you had trouble with yours, it may have been due to a lack of
understanding of how it operates. I found the manual less than adequate at
explaining it's fine points but this is also true of the STV. A paper written
by Jim Jansuz on the ST-4 makes it all very clear.
