Hi Alan --I believe the ST5 will also necessitate  a laptop, although it
needn't be a fancy pentium. I believe a cheap used 486 will suffice.
The laptop and a marine deep discharge gel cell battery will set you back a
whole lot less than an STV. 

But if you hated the ST4, you're not apt to be any happier with an ST5. 
Perhaps the ST4 you had problems with was sick. There are a lot of
folks out there who have had excellent results with the ST4.  When equipped
with a flip mirror and a parfocal eyepiece, I had good results with mine.
The STV is much easier, but comes at a premium price.
