[APML] Re: Monitor Calibration Thoughts
Hi Warren,
Thank you for your words about our calibration page, which I appreciate
very much. Happy to know it's useful for you.
Even if one works in a strictly controlled environment, which of course
means artificial lighting and no open windows, display brightness must be
controlled and readjusted as soon as lighting conditions may vary during a
processing session. Relatively small changes in environmental lighting can
seriously affect what you are perceiving, and hence what you are doing,
with an image. This is what makes the calibration task a critical one.
A calibration procedure must be as objective and adaptable to specific
user's conditions as possible. It also must be consistently repeatable. For
this reason we avoided using images on our calibration page. The brightness
calibration figure and RGB scales are dynamically generated by JavaScript
routines on your own computer and display.
I only want to make a comment about what you say in your post.
> -Do the calibration in complete darkness
Are you sure? I don't think display brightness can be correctly calibrated
this way. Any calibration must be performed under the existing lighting
conditions in your working place, which are unlikely to be of total
darkness. Furthermore, as such peculiar darkness conditions affect basic
monitor performance characteristics, you should consider that most users
will not be under complete darkness when viewing your images.
Regards,
