I used to work for a DOT Com that provided games to Internet
customers. We used cookies to make your experience better. We would
have your username and password so you didn't have to remember to log in
every time for example. Cookies help remember settings. When you go to
Mapquest, they remember your preferences through cookies for instance.

Ad companies figured out they could find what your preferences were by
using cookies, but keep in mind, a company can only read their cookies,
they can't read other cookies. So they can only track what sites they run
ads on that you've visited. They can't get any personal information about
you. They can using statistics determine your habits and that lets them
target advertising toward you. Its not as evil as its lead to
believe. Yes its evil, but not that evil.

IE 6.0 supports 3rd party cookie blocks. This lets you block cookies
trying to be set from sites other than the base site you are
visiting. Basically this kills ad cookies while letting real ones that do
good things for you work.
