Alan,

We have extensive control of color balance and contrast by adjusting all 4 curve channels. I focus most of my effort on the three color channels. However, "with power comes responsibility". You need to know what you want to achieve, and that is a lot harder than it sounds. I developed my sense of color by looking closely at the "best" astrophotographers renditions of the object I was working on. At first I tried to match what others were doing. Now, I strive for a look where the colors are varied and believable.
