Matt,

    Very impressive.  Just for kicks, try this process on the full
size image and tell me what you think:

    In PhotoShop (6.0) goto Filter/Other/Minimum
        and select Radius =1.  Hit OK

    Then goto Edit/Fade Minimum
        and select Opacity = 70%.  Hit OK

   (I'm having to guess a little at the 70% level since I don't have
your full size image)
