Alan,

To add just a bit to Scott's comments, "Photoshop User" magazine is produced
by the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), which can be
a very good resource.  They produce travelling one-day seminars which were
quite helpful to me when I was first learning Photoshop.
