Re: [APML] 10x20 minutes of the Rosette Nebula from apartment balcony.
Arne,
That is a very nice image. My only suggestion would be
to curve it a little more and boost the contrast if that
is at all possible.

Subject: [APML] 10x20 minutes of the Rosette Nebula from apartment balcony.
Dear friends,
After I took delivery of an SBIG STV autoguider late last year I've been
very
eager to see what I could achieve from my apartment balcony using film
through
my Vixen R200SS (8" f/4). My first attempts where carried out in November
last
year, but it became obvious that my sky conditions didn't allow for very
long
exposures at f/4!!
I then started thinking about getting a LPS filter, but unfortunately the
limited focus travel of my scope didn't allow for a filter holder. I had
almost
given up on the idea when I saw that Herm Perez had been able to use an IDAS
LPS
filter on his R200SS. I contacted Herm and asked how he had solved the
problem.
It turned out that the coma-corrector he was using had threading on both
sides
and that he was able to attach the filter using this threading.
Unfortunately my
coma-corrector where threaded on one side only (even though it's the same
type
of coma-corrector)!! Then Herm came up with the great idea of gluing a
standard
stepper ring to the coma-corrector, allowing me to use any filter with the
setup. Problem solved!
After some test images to identify the correct exposure length using Kodak
Elitechrome 200 with and IDAS LPS filter attached to my R200SS I decided to
try
the Rosette Nebula as my first real target. I made 10 images each with an
exposure of 20 minutes each. After averaging them together using RegiStar
1.0.3
I sent them to Matt BenDaniel who helped me with the image processing. The
final
result can be viewed using this link:

I would like to take the opportunity to publicly express my thanks to both
Herm
and Matt for taking the time and being so helpful!!
Best regards,
Arne
