The higher resolution scanners are capable of pulling
out the tiniest details from a negative. This includes
grain! I compared some negatives scanned at 2700dpi and
they looked "less grainy", however on closer examination
they also looked softer. On very fine grain film a 4000
dpi scanner can produce some very sharp images.
I have also found scanning at 4000dpi then down sampling
to, say, 2700 dpi results in a cleaner sharper image
than scanning at a native 2700.
