Does anyone here use IRAF?

I'm having some problems under linux with getting 16-bit images to
display using ximtool.  After discovering that the netpbm utility
pnmtofits seems generate byte-flipped values, I wrote a
quick-and-dirty program to to PGM --> FITS which sort of works.
Before writing the values out, I subtract 32768 and have set
BZERO=32768.  But the display seems to pass through zero in the middle
of the grayscale.  Star cores are gray, surrounded by a white ring,
then dropping down to black and back to gray for the sky.
