RE: [APML] something different...

Tony,

I couldn’t get either link to work. I’ve never had problems linking to your site before. Page not found was the result.

Hello,

Been doing some studying the last few days... trying to learn more about post processing techniques with the raw CCD data... here's something you will probably want to see.

Instead of averaging the six M51 shots, I co-added them together... this is closer to "stacking" the images in the old days with film... more detail shows up, but also more noise. After this, I used CCDsharp to add some mild deconvolution, then I added a mild unsharp mask to make the stars hard edged. My goal... to bring out as many of the anonymous galaxies behind M-51 as possible.

I kept a portion of the galaxy in each shot for scale... to me it is mind boggling that I am using M-51 as a reference object... the real picture in each of these shots are the many galaxies (and perhaps very faint stars) that populate the field. I tried to make the stars hard edged so we might hazard a guess between faint star and galaxy...

     Here's the results:

     Have a good one,
