To be honest, the slide is too dark for me to see any definitive patterns under normal lighting.  They do show up well in scans.   Rescanning the slide consistently produced the same pattern.  As I mentioned in the linked web page, I even flipped the slide and scanned it.  The pattern flipped right along with it.
 
So Newton rings can be caused by imperfections WITHIN the film?!

It looks like Newton rings caused by two surfaces that are almost exactly parallel, but not quite flat. Two sides of the film, perhaps are almost parallel? Can you see it when you hold the slide under a fluorescent light?
