RE: [APML] A new Whirlpool Photo...
I tried PJ 400 back when it was still PJM-2 (Ektapress 640) and ran into the
mystery "magenta cast" problem that was discussed here a while back. Given
the erratic results from it and no explanation of why the problem occurred,
I stuck with the SG 800+ emulsion for the time being. I may yet give the
Elite Chrome a try and I am on the waiting list for an F.L.I. CCD camera...

Mike,
That's certainly a nicely executed shot! But I wondered if you had
thought
of using a film like PJ400 or E200? Back in 97 I ran a test on the
Dumbbell using GPY (European name for PPF) and Fuji 800. The Fuji 800
shot
was substantially under recorded compared to the GPY, and the colours
came
out with with a strong blue cast. i.e. the colours were mostly shades
of
blue and reds were very muted, which seem to form a strong component of
M27
on both film and CCD images. Subsequently I ran tests against PJM-2 and
GPY and I thought that the PJM-2 had even better colour differentiation
and
recording power than GPY. As you may know, PJ400 is the same film as
PJM-2
in new packaging. PJ400 has been formally discontined but I understand
that it is still widely available. With a good film, such as PJ400 has
proven to be, this is a good time to buy up a stock - IMHO the only
sensible way to buy astro film is in sizeable stocks - enough to last a
year or so - this helps overcome the current problem of rapid turnaround
in
film types.
