Bert,
You'd be surprised how well you can do with an LX-50. I highly recommend
you start by piggybacking a camera on it with a regular old camera
lens--anywhere from wide angle to telephoto, and guide through the scope (get
a guiding eyepiece). You can get some very nice results that way, good enough
to show off. Wide angle shots don't even need to be guided. No, they won't
look as good as some of the shots you've linked to from APML. Taking
long-exposure shots through the scope is considerably more complex and will
require a significantly larger investment in time and equipment (IOW big
bucks). But I think you'll be pleased with what you can accomplish (don't get
me wrong--even piggybacking isn't easy and there's a lot you'll need to learn
before you can get good results). Good luck.
