Yes Ann, I use the AE-1 and the AE-1P both for astrophotography
and while the battery drain is significant on open shutter work this
problem can be solved by using a homemade adaptor in the
battery compartment to bring the leads out to 4 D cells which will
provide the needed 6 volts for several nights of open shutter work.
I also installed a Beattie Intenscreen in the AE-1P for added light
transmission to help with focusing.

The old F-1(mechanical) has also been recommended and is good
provided you can find one that hasn't been worked to death. Most
of these were purchased by professionals and have had a hard
life. Unless you need all of the accessories that the F-1 can be fitted
with, the FTb is also very good and can be found (usually) in better
condition and at a lesser price.
