Re: [APML] pentium vs athlon
hello,
i don't know if the piii 550 is as fast as an athlon 800. that sounds like a
bit of a stretch to me. maybe it is that the retailer has piii 550's in stock
and does not have an athlon 800? my friends athlon 750 is very comparable to my
piii 700. anyway, a piii 550 is nothing to sneeze at. make sure you get the
one with on-die cache. it makes a difference. you couldn't go wrong with it.
it should serve you well for at least a few years.
as for the video card. if you like 3d gaming and also perform digital imaging
then i would go with something like a nvidia geforce cpu with ddr (there are
many manufactures that produce video cards using this video cpu... creative labs
annihilator pro <-- my #1 choice and the one i own, asus 6800, hercules prophet,
etc. around $275-$300). this video cpu screams in 3d gaming applications and
performs as well, if not better than so-called business graphics cards that are
made specifically for intensive graphics work with programs such as photoshop
and digital scanning. if you're mainly into just digital imaging then i would
look at the matrox g400 or g400 max. these cards could save you $50 to $160. i
would suggest 32mb of video memory, with a minimum of 16mb.
if you need more information, please contact me directly
(rgabbert@mgfairfax.rr.com) as i don't want people to get upset about this "pc"
thread, although it is related to our hobby.
if you have a budget in mind, i'd be glad to suggest a system for you and
provide you with all the technical information you need. will you be
building/upgrading it yourself?
hope this helps.
