[APML] G11 Maintenance
Hello to all:
After reading Scott Kindt's description on how to improve the G11, I called
Scott LosMandy. I told him that my G11 was about 7-8 yrs old and woundered
if he had a process to up-grade my older model to a current version. He
really didn't think that it was necessary. However, he did tell me that
after all this time that I should take my mount apart and clean it and that
most likely some of the bearings were probably frozen. I have always had
problems with not being able to get the two clutch's to firmly grab the
mount and hold it in a firm locked position. He told me that all clutch
surfaces should be totaly devoid of any lubricant. Long story short, I
found that the clutch surfaces were wet with lubricant and that all berings
were locked up tight. I used WD40 to free all the berings, cleaned them with
alcohol and then coated them with white lithium (not remomended but thats
all I had) grease. Scott recommends a grease called "Slick 50". In any case
the lithium grease (not sure of spelling) should last for a few seasons
before the mount needs service again. I used alcohol to clean all surfaces.
I put the mount back together and now the clutch's will lock tight and the
RA and DEC feels alot smoother.
Thought I would pass on my experience. Total time to do the job was about
two hours.
Good Luck,
Bob Hughes
