As noted in another response, inkjet prints don't need any higher image
resolution than 300 or so dpi. Some sources even claim 200 dpi is the best
the eye can resolve. In spite of that, the higher resolution printers do a
better job because the colors are laid down more accurately. So you're
probably not losing any quality by remaining with 300 dpi resolution in your
photoshop image but using the printer at its highest resolution.
On the other question: why your computer locks up when you try to generate a
bigger file---a completely different problem. Do you have enough RAM?
Photoshop recommends at least 3 times the size of your largest file. For
more than 19 MB images, you should have 128MB RAM. I have 128 in my machine
and have no problems with 50 MB or more files but I also have a very big,
fast, disk.
