Sagittarius has to be my favorite constellation. So many wonderful things to take pictures of here. Of all the deep-sky objects in this constellation, the area surrounding M20 ("The Trifid Nebula") and M8 ("The Lagoon Nebula") is my favorite.
These images were taken from a 30-minute exposure at the prime focus of the 100mm f/5 Televue Genesis APO refractor, piggybacked to the Meade 10" SCT. Guiding was done manually using the 10" as the guidescope. This photo was taken during the new-moon of July, 1995.
This image was cropped from the original 4.5 degree frame an focuses in on the most interesting objects. This includes M21, M20, and M8. If you have the hardware to handle it, here is a high-res version (953x768x24bit JPG 169k).
This is M20 (also known as The Trifid Nebula). This image was cropped from the original 8MB TIFF image and is available in a 640x480x24bit 109K JPG file.
This is M8 (also known as The Lagoon Nebula). This image was also cropped from the original 8MB TIFF image and is available in a 640x480x24bit 95K JPG file.
For those interested... here is the full 4.5 degree frame! As with the first version... this image is available in a low-res version (640x960x24bit JPG 138k) and a high-res version (1024x1530x24bit JPG 276k). Choose which version fits your horizontal screen width, then scroll down to see the whole image.
