The Lunar Eclipse of November 1993 was one of the strangest I've seen. The top (north) part of the moon was much brighter than the rest... otherwise this would have been an extremely dark eclipse. The colors present ranged from dark brown, through bright orange, to a light pink.

This photo was taken with a Meade 10" f/10 SCT (Premier 2120/50HSD), which normally has a 2500mm focal length... too long to fit the whole moon. So, I used a Lumicon Giant Easy Guider as a focal-reducer giving just the right amount of focal-length (~1600mm). This is a 15 second exposure at f/6.5 on Fuji SHG-400. Like I said... it was a dark eclipse.

This image is also available in a high-res version (982x768x24bit JPG 202k).

This photograph appeared as NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day on April 3, 1996. This is a nice service the folks at NASA provide (even without using my pictures), something interesting every day. So, check it daily!
